Obituary for Elsie Diachenko
Elsie Diachenko passed away peacefully on April 9, 2018.
She was born February 27, in Cincinnati, OH, and raised in Corbin, KY, by her mother, Ollie Hart.
Elsie was a “Rosie the Riveter” during WWII in the shipyards in Baltimore, MD. After WWII, she enrolled at Western Kentucky State College (WKU) where she met Nick Diachenko, Sr.; they married and had three children: Debbie, Nick, Jr., and Trish.
Elsie finished her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Bluefield State College in West Virginia. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education and her Rank I in Counseling from Western Kentucky University.
Elsie’s career in teaching and counseling touched countless students’ lives in such a way that many reached out, as adults, to express appreciation for her positive influence. Locally, she was a teacher/counselor at Sanders Elementary, Eisenhower Elementary, and Lowe Elementary schools.
Always the “Belle of the Ball,” she loved people and they loved her. Dancing, music, and theater were favorite things for Elsie, who also loved travel, antiques, and animals.
Elsie maintained a second residence in St. Petersburg, FL, where she had many friends who enjoyed her outgoing personality.
Elsie’s guidance and grit provided her family with all necessities along with a positive Christian role model.
Elsie is survived by her three children, Debbie Gillespie (Jim), Nick Diachenko (Donna), and Trish Diachenko (Joe), six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4400 Dixie Highway. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 am until time of service.
